Do you have a regular schedule for when tortoises become available? I am interested in a Russian or Hermann's and no longer want to purchase one at Petco. Thanks

Usually your tortoise needs to be 2 to 3 years old to tell for sure what sex (sometimes even older). The older they are the better chance of being correct on the sex. Sometimes you can make a good guess at one year. Tortoises can be temperate sexed (the sex is determined by the incubation temperature of the eggs). The problem with temperatures sexing tortoises is that there are very few studies that have determined the temperature to produce the desired sex in tortoises. Even for the species we have data for most incubators (and for that matter thermometers) are not accurate enough to be able to guarantee the sex (if you are off by ½ a degree you could produce the wrong sex). Many people use data from aquatic turtles to temperature sex tortoises, which doesn’t apply to most tortoise species.
